A city break exploring Beaune and Dijon in Burgundy

Burgundy, a place of great food, delightful landscapes, and famous wines, holds a special place in my heart. I recall my last visit, a wine-tasting trip in the Chassagne-Montrachet area during the autumn. The leaves on the…

Le Carnet de Rachel was born from my passion for travelling with a camera and exploring new places. Over time, it evolved into a space dedicated to sharing beautiful finds across France, London, and Europe, from independent cafés and boutique hotels to art exhibitions, independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and inspiring lifestyle destinations.

I couldn’t resist these white sun umbrellas on Rim I couldn’t resist these white sun umbrellas on Rimini Beach. I didn’t plan to photograph these; they had such a presence that made me pick up my camera. Shot on square format film, like most of my beach work. I love the shape they create in the image and the contemporary feel they deliver in the photographs. What do you think?
I always end up photographing beaches like Rimini. I always end up photographing beaches like Rimini. Not so much for the sea, but I love the lining of the sun umbrellas. The way they’re arranged, the colours, the structure. They are nearly shaping a geometric composition and drafting some contemporary art. These red ones stood out right away. I shot them on square format film. What do you think?

I love the composition and symmetry of these umbrellas, transforming these photos into modern art. What do you think?

Most of the beaches in Italy are private, where yo Most of the beaches in Italy are private, where you can hire a sunbed or deck chair with an umbrella. You will notice the army of parasols walking along the beaches in most of Italy, transforming it into a very colourful scenery. Past the torture of walking on pebbly beaches ( keep your shoes on when walking to the shore), the water was lovely, immaculate and hot, but it was 35 °c outside. We spent a few hours at the beach in Ospedaletti on the Italian Riviera, hiding from the burning sunshine, under the yellow sun umbrellas, reading books. I hadn’t spent time reading a book in ages, and I managed to finish a 400-page book that week.

The train journey that takes you to Menton from Ni The train journey that takes you to Menton from Nice is one of the most beautiful. It lets you uncover places like Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Eze-sur-Mer, Cap d’Ail, and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. I had heard of Menton many times and didn’t know what to expect. Menton is the most Italian town in France. The Italian influence is everywhere in the architecture, as in the colour of the buildings, painted ochre yellow and terracotta. The view is gorgeous over the beach among the terracotta roofs, the yellow ochre and terracotta buildings. Walk your way along the narrow streets of the Medieval old town for the whole experience. There’s a lot to uncover in Menton, and one day will not do it justice.
